Soccer

St Joseph’s Charlestown has punched above its weight for many years in schools soccer and the reasons for this is its size, small in stature but huge as regards commitment and bonding of all that is good and welcome in a small community like we have in this East Mayo town.

The team is helped by the local clubs which include Charlestown Athletic F.C., Urlaur United F.C. and also draws on the local Gaelic clubs namely Charlestown Sarsfields, Kilmovee Shamrocks and Curry. In more recent times, the sport of hurling, through Caiseal Gaels, also provides another outlet for the players of all these great teams culminating in the togetherness we witness year after year in St. Joseph’s soccer teams.

A special word of thanks to Charlestown Athletic who make their playing facilities available to the team, year after year without fail. This is very much appreciated by the school. Down through the years there have been many great days, countless Connacht titles at u.14, u16/17 and Senior level.

The seniors reached the All Ireland Final a number of years back and finished runners-up. The other age groups finish their competition at provincial level and have delivered some great days out to the school community over the years.

Currently the u.17s are Connacht Cup holders after an epic season last year where they came through against near neighbours Swinford by the narrowest of margins after extra time with a 2-1 scoreline. The same team won the u.14 Connacht title two years previously.

The present season saw the senior team top their group in superb form but unfortunately they came up short against old foes Belmullet at the Connacht semi-final stage. Belmullet went on to lift the Cup.

The present u.17s has started well in their group while the 1st years had only the one outing which ended in defeat. The u15 team are starting their campaign shortly.
